Personalizing the Past was my personal response to the call that went forth forth in "Caught in the Middle," the report representing the findings and recommendations of the California Middle Grade Task Force, that "there must be a vast improvement in the quality and availability of instructional materials if the goal of cultural literacy is to be achieved." Each social studies kit is "facilitated by rich, diverse instructional materials" and " the sources of knowledge ... are of high quality, attractive and compelling in their power to capture and hold the attention and imaginations of young adolescents."
Personalizing the Past kits endeavor to increase student's cultural, geographic, historical and ethnic literacy. Multi-sensory lessons are designed for students with many different learning styles, and a cooperative model is often the basis for these activity-based, hands-on learning experiences.
Believing that teacher education is the first step, I am available for workshop presentations and have conducted in-service trainings throughout California. Workshops are offered on all the Personalizing the Past History Kits and workshops customized to your individual school or district needs. These workshops provide teachers with a wide range of supplemental activities. These workshops are activity oriented, and participants will have an opportunity to recreate a historical time period by actually doing stimulating hands-on projects.
