This kit gives us the history of ancient India beginning with the Harappan culture along the Indus River in 2500 B.C.E. This advanced culture which knew public baths and indoor plumbing was mysteriously replaced by the Aryans migrating through the Khyber and Bolan Passes into the Punjab area. With the Aryans we have the roots of the Hindu religion and of the caste system. Written in Sanskrit (the root of Hindi, the language of India today) the Vedas or epic poem speak of ancient gods, of caste and duty. As the birthplace of Buddha, the study of Buddhism is also a part of this unit, as are the Mauryan and Gupta Empires. The story of Rama and Sita, The Ramayana is the literature selection for this unit. |
