This study emphasizes the Middle East as the crucial link between Europe and Africa and the Far East. Through a study of Islam and the universities known as the houses of wisdom, students see how the heritage of the ancient world was preserved by Arab scholars and reintroduced to Europe via al Andalus, Islamic Spain. By looking at science, mathematics, games and proverbs, students recognize the roots of the strongest elements in western culture and thought. A study of Islam shows how that religion permeated business, banking, art, and architecture. A broader comparison, "Citadels of the Spirit," asks students to compare and contrast temples, churches, mosques and pagodas all over the world. The strength and humor of Islamic culture is further explored in the two literature selections, Seven Daughters and Seven Sons and One Thousand and One Arabian Nights.
